This event has ended.

FB Gallery presents Tiago Gualberto in his first New York City show.

Living in the city of São Paulo, the young artist got his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2005 from the Federal University of Minas Gerais. He already has participated in many group exhibitions and held four solo exhibitions in Brazil. Tiago Gualberto has always related his artistic research to the cultural practices applied to social development. And he has taught cultural and art education workshops for children and adolescents in situation of social vulnerability in schools, communities and NGOs in Brazil.

During his adolescence, Tiago Gualberto started his career in visual arts as a designer of supermarket posters. When he enrolled at the Federal University of Minas Gerais’ Fine Arts School he joined the university’s “Affirmative Action Program”, which taught strategies aimed at reducing the social exclusion of African-Brazilians. In 2005 Tiago held his first solo exhibition with the “Second National Seminar on Affirmative Action” at the Federal University of Minas Gerais with the theme “Access and permanence of the black population in higher education”. The contact with black intellectuals and with the academy of fine arts provided the young artist a sensitive attitude towards his quest for his own identity through the memory of the black people and the miscegenation process experienced in Brazil.

Gualberto’s work speaks about the Afro-Brazilian culture and the inner discourse that such an upbringing provides. This juxtaposition of culture and ethnicity is highlighted through his unique use of chalk, a fragile medium that Gualberto uses as a tool of expressive strength. In many of his works we see a surrealist and dadaist touch, with depictions of absurd mythological creatures or everyday objects detourned from their original use.
