“Show #4” Exhibition

The Parlour Art Gallery

poster for “Show #4” Exhibition

This event has ended.

The work in this exhibition is arrived at through an intuitive process. The work is built and assembled with special attention paid to the surface and texture and is instrumental in conveying the emotional content of the imagery.

Using discarded material Bridget Mullen collages various things together. Old paper, string, any possible remnant is found, put together, taken apart and put back together again. Along the way things are painted or pictures are drawn on the surfaces. She describes this as a way to process what is happening in her life.

Chris Marshalls’ work is about aggression, boredom and the paralyzing feeling that occurs from monotony. The images and technique he uses convey an existential crisis taking place. The faces are nonexistent, portraying a person that is not present emotionally. His surfaces describe as much as the imagery in that the muted color and harrowing textures depict a joyless landscape.

Christopher Patch creates three dimensional forms out of paper. Made out of old torn watercolors, prints, grave rubbings and wrapping paper collected during walks they are pieced back together to create shapes and surfaces that in themselves represent something new.

Skin and its impermanence has always been a constant in Janice Sloanes’ work. She collaborated with her friend and model for 7 years until his death photographing and taking inspiration from his changing body and his battle with cancer. The photos shown here are a series of proofs that Janice cut up and put back together again. A way of ordering, remembering and ultimately making sense of her friends life and death.

Also in the video room Janice will be showing her video "Morning Walk” which was shot during a residency this past summer in Salem Germany. In the piece she reflects on the history of the region, a fascination with the pristine countryside surrounding her, slugs and at that moment feeling like she was the only Jew in Germany.
