This event has ended.

Jason Orrell and Brian Edgerton present Abstract Party, a collaboration consisting of video and painting at Local Project in Long Island City, NY.

The artists reimagine the genre of abstraction, examining its roots as a social, spiritual and political motivator. Exploring the porous divisions between screen and surface, the physical and the virtual, they seek to reinvigorate abstraction’s utopian aspirations. Set against the saturated market of throwaway images, theirs are made not to be consumed, but engaged: stripped down and retooled for dancing.

Color pops in the funky shapes and twisting lines of Jason’s deceptively simple paintings. They are derived from his many iPod drawings produced on subway rides and deposited on his tumblr blog. Brian’s videos stutter and flow across expanses of time both glacial and instantaneous. Their organic folds and curving geometries pulsate according to internal rhythms. Both artists address the growing role of the digital within creative processes and the place of the human touch within this domain.
