Contemporary life is serious enough with all the social and political drama of the modern age, so with this exhibition we celebrate the less common use of humor to comment upon the issues of our times. Humor can be an extraordinarily powerful and effective means for making a point, and some artists have refined their craft in the direction of driving home a real zinger by first making you laugh, and then making you think.
Jonny Fenix presents belly aching, clever commentary about serious issues involving religion, sexuality, and perversion. Through his minimalist graphic design and masterful silk screen and stencil printing, Fenix provides a sort of shock-value approach, like one-liners from a comedian which inspire both laughter and that sudden realization you just heard the sound of one hand clapping. Conspiracy theorist, musician, and multi-media artist, Dave Tree, takes everyday, household “items” for his canvas and subverts our common presumptions about their function and challenges the received wisdom about what constitutes serious art and political discourse. Victor Cox conveys something of a dark edge with the whimsical, but memorable, characters he creates that capture the imagination and point towards a backstory you really want to know, but are afraid to find out. In “Serious Fun,” each artist comments on the human condition in ways that provoke the mind, compel the heart, tickle the soul.
