This event has ended.

Janet Borden, Inc. presents SMALL TOWNS, a new exhibition of color photographs by TINA BARNEY.

Tina Barney’s work is immediately recognizable for a certain palette and a certain genuine and unforced interplay among the characters. She is best known for her narrative depiction of family and friends, concentrating on her own summer community, and during her travels to other countries. She is now concentrating on small town America— community projects, pageants, parades, re-enactments and fairs.

In Small Towns, Ms. Barney directs her discriminating eye to document elements of American life that are becoming scarce. Behind the malls and interstate highways that now typify the American landscape still lie small towns. The life they harbor is situated in the local businesses, parades, fairs, independent cafes and stores that are Barney’s subjects.

True to her work throughout her thirty-year career, Barney does not pose her subjects nor does she manipulate the setting of her photographs. She puts her four-by-five view camera inside the scene and observes.
