Blanche Powers "Tillandsia Usneoides"
Kim Foster Gallery
This event has ended.
Kim Foster Gallery exhibits recent drawings by Blanche Nettles Powers. This is her first solo exhibit at the Kim Foster Gallery.
Tillandsia Usneoides (Spanish moss) is a defining element of the landscape of coastal Georgia, where the artist resides. The plant's propensity to flourish in humid climates makes Spanish moss unique to the Southeastern states. Spanish moss proliferates primarily on Live Oak trees. However, winds and birds carry clumps of moss to unexpected places. Patio furniture, outdoor grills, cars, fences, telephone wires, side walks, and swimming pools, all become home to Spanish moss, at least for a while.
Fascinated by this profuse flowering plant and its relation to Southern folklore, Powers began to photograph and collect moss to study in her studio. Tillandsia Usneoides, an exhibition of abstract drawings, is a culmination of numerous months of experimenting. The resulting body of work has an eerie, supernatural quality which is vaguely reminiscent of Southern Gothic literature.
Powers has long associated her work with nature. This connection stems from her childhood spent navigating the rivers of Savannah. She currently resides along the Wilmington River where Live Oaks are plentiful and Spanish moss is abundant.
