This event has ended.

James Fuentes announces its forthcoming exhibition by gallery artist Noam Rappaport (Born 1974, Sweden).

Rappaport works simultaneously on varied but related groups of works that explore the intersections of painting, sculpture, and drawing, through multiple methods of mark making and construction.

Employing the offset and the partial image, large, shaped canvases provide a specific counterpoint to the exhibition. At once semi0figurative and semi0architectural, these paintings suggest a continuous play between image and object. Looking back at the viewer, and seeking to evoke a draw and repel, this work highlights the viewer’s position in relation to the artwork.

In his low relief, canvas0wrapped, framed panels, Rappaport uses discarded elements from prior projects as a basis for experimentation and reorganization. Dirty and puckered, these sculptural paintings render the layering of negative space on top of negative space as it occurs on a human scale. Other work is more directly concerned with the compilation and manipulation of studio remnants. In Collection #8, events, materials, and processes are organized into a colorful document of ongoing explorations, acting as a microcosm for Rappaport’s body of work as a whole.
