Hollis Dunlap Exhibition
Axelle Fine Arts
This event has ended.
As a recent graduate Hollis Dunlap was one of the youngest artists represented by Axelle Fine Arts. Over the years, Dunlap has matured into a master of color, composition, and craftsmanship. While still only in his thirties, he challenges the titans of 19th Century Realism. Traces and reverence to such old masters as Caravaggio and Vermeer to Hopper, Sargent and Diebenkorn are woven into the thoughtfully constructed and expertly wrought canvasses. Close examination shows the brushwork of an artist confident and considered, the paint application just enough to describe his vision with sublime precision.
Dunlap has dispensed his deep understanding of the visual arts over the past decade by teaching in various East Coast institutions. Boston, New York, San Francisco, New Orleans are just some of the cities which hosted his one-man shows.
On Saturday, March 10th Axelle Fine Arts will once again play host to a fantastic show. The rich, powerful new work is another step forward as Dunlap shoulders aside his artistic heroes of the past to stand solidly in their presence. To see Dunlap’s brilliant handling of the effect of light on flesh, the spark of life in the model’s eye and the liquid movement of shadow beneath form is to understand why, in this modern age, artists such as Dunlap continue to find unending challenges in representational art. These current works will retain the enduring immediacy they were conceived with for generations.
