Born in Ulm Germany, Uli studied photography in Rome and later moved to London in the 1980’s where he currently resides. It was when he shot Sting for Arena Magazine that his acclaimed career in portraiture began. In 2006 he was elected a Hasselblad Master. While his technique and conceptual strength has been acclaimed by his peers, there is a growing critical appeal to his work as well.

Uli Weber has mastered not only one genre but has excelled in various photographic disciplines; portraiture, fashion and travel. This exhibition focuses on the artist’s work in portraiture with subjects from film, fashion, theater and music. Among the subjects is an arresting image of the bare-chested inchoate actor Daniel Radcliffe in front of a majestic white horse from his break out West End stage debut in the drama Equus. This image captures the delicacy of a young actor on the brink of becoming a man as he stares contemplatively away from the viewer. In a more bold, colorful image, the mischievous Boy George looks straight ahead at the viewer, painted devil-red and adorned in playful horns, with his steely blue eyes illuminated he emanates a fierce look of rock-and-roll confrontation. Samantha Morton is portrayed emerging from a richly ornate Indian taxi. She ascends, luminous, from the gold & red embroidered upholstery, like the rise of a phoenix.

Whether it’s Achille Castiglioni, Hugh Grant, or Kylie Minogue, Uli Weber brings forth the resonating character within each of these eighteen subjects. We’re taken on a journey through these contemporary photographs that pull us in and leave a footprint in our memory of life today. From the halls of the Victoria and Albert Museum to a New York Gallery, Uli Weber is one of the most accomplished and accessible photographers of his generation. When asked twenty years ago what his vision was, he replied, “to create beautiful pictures that are always relevant”.
