This event has ended.

Davidson Contemporary presents a new exhibition by Megan Olson entitled Legible Fiction. This is Olson’s sixth solo exhibition with Davidson Contemporary as she continues her explorations into abstraction using oil, watercolor, and drawing

Megan Olson’s work is not literal – there is no figuration or attempt at direct representation. The title, Legible Fiction (from a song of the same name) refers to her perception that art tells a story, and abstract art does not necessarily portray real life, but defines emotions, thoughts, and memories to which the viewer can relate. The process of painting is a narrative, but the plot is open to interpretation. Within Olson’s work can be seen musical notation, cellular biology, graffiti, and calligraphy.

Olson layers paint and, for this show, combines watercolor and oil, to create a three- dimensionality that belies her simple medium. The layering is done systematically, and Olson waits until each coat is dry, allowing the paint on top to have a transparency while also partially obscuring the brushstrokes beneath it. Each painting seems to breathe, pushing different colors and shapes in and out of view, revealing and hiding both form and meaning from the viewer.
