This event has ended.

Cristin Tierney presents a solo exhibition by Yorgo Alexopoulos entitled Transmigrations. This is Alexopoulos’ first show with the gallery.

For this exhibition, Alexopoulos will present a digitally animated installation comprised of twenty-four flat screen monitors that surround the gallery in a synchronized audio-visual environment. This immersive artwork takes the viewer on a journey through a series of distinct visual chapters, exploring ideas of nature, folklore, magic and spirituality. The animation is comprised of hundreds of images, derived from Alexopoulos’ own photos, paintings, drawings and video footage, which are then juxtaposed with found images to create this unique aesthetic experience.

Alexopoulos creates his animations by making definitive decisions, using techniques he developed early in his career as a painter. There is no algorithm or automated component that drives the technology behind the work. Using the classic modernist grid as compositional grounding, Transmigrations utilizes structures first fully embraced by the constructivists. The installation creates a contemporary dynamism akin to Moholy-Nagy’s kinetic sculpture, Light Space Modulator from 1930, and as a visual spectacle is both stylistically and intrinsically inspired by Jennifer Bartlett’s Rhapsody, a 987-enamel plate installation from 1976. While a part of Alexopoulos’ work is indebted to the tradition of early landscape painting, a larger source of inspiration comes from his belief that there is an innate benefit derived from the contemplation and reverence of nature and all aspects of our universe that
are beyond comprehension.

Yorgo Alexopoulos lives and works in New York City. His work has been displayed in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout the US. Most recently his multi-channel digital animation, No Feeling Is Final, was on exhibit at the Torrence Art Museum, California and a site-specific version was commissioned for the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas
