This event has ended.

With the aid of a spectrometer, the artist has analyzed the spectra of light sources within the gallery in order to create an exhibition tasked with navigating a single color. Malek has chosen to present two large paintings, both orange, and with identical dimensions determined by the footprint of the main exhibition space.

Orange itself – it seems – tends to occupy a fairly ambiguous position. It is neither red, nor yellow, and does not carry those colors’ cultural and linguistic connotations. While we often perceive orange as having “bright” or “warm” characteristics, it is used in this exhibition as value-neutral; orange appears as a medium color. Orange is the compliment of blue.

How do monochrome paintings function together as autonomous and responsive?

Consideration finds fertile ground in the specificity of Malek’s presentation – in this exhibition he is most interested in the encompassing experience of color and the perception of altered space. The exhibition investigates the interstice between the specificity of painting and the deployment of color to create an experiential environment.

Drawing from historical models such as Klein, Mosset, Newman , and Flavin, the artist enlists internal luminosity and external presence. David Malek’s previous exhibitions with the gallery have focused on investigating luminous saturations within the paintings themselves.

Additional pigment-based artworks, also orange, will be present.
