"Vignelli: Church" Exhibition
Saint Peter's Church
This event has ended.
In 1974 Lella and Massimo Vignelli began working on a comprehensive design of the graphic identity, interiors, furniture and liturgical objects for the "new" (1977) Saint Peter's Church. "Church:Vignelli" presents sketches, correspondence, concepts, and conversations of this impressive process and situates Saint Peter's Church within the Vignelli's life-long work.
Lella and Massimo Vignelli are pre-eminite interior space, graphic identity and product designers. Together, they founded Vignelli Associates in 1972 and in 1974 began working on a comprehensive design of the "new" (1977) Saint Peter's Church. The Vignelli influence on modern society is monumental: directional signage of the New York City Subway System, including the classic 1972 and 1974 Subway Diagram; corporate identities for Ford, Bloomingdales, Knoll, American Airlines, and countless others; product design for Poltrona Frau, Rosenthal, Venini Glass, among others; interior and exhibit design for Polotrona Frau, Hauserman, Saint Peter's Church, Barney's; architectural identities or books for Guggenheim Museum, MoMA, Met Museum, the Louvre, Richard Meier, The New Yorker, Penguin Books, and many more.
Massimo is credited with bringing the modernist type-face Helvetica to the United States. Lella's exquisite silver jewelery is iconic.
