This event has ended.

After Arles and Paris, Delpire & Cie – an exhibition by Rencontres d’Arles – comes to New York. Focusing on the work of visionary publisher Robert Delpire, this important retrospective is spread across four venues, including the Gallery at Hermès, with support from the Aperture Foundation.

Roberto Delpire – the tireless, self-styled passeur d’images – is forever associated with great photographers like Cartier-Bresson, Brassaï, Doisneau or Lartigue, whose work he published from the beginning of the 1950s onwards. Originally artistic director of the magazine L’Oeil, he opened his own gallery after setting up an advertising agency. Delpire also produced films, notably William Klein’s Who Are You, Polly Magoo? He founded France’s Centre National de la Photographie in 1982, where he launched the hugely successful Photo Poche series of small-format, paperback monographs on leading photographers. Later, he curated major photography exhibitions for museums across Europe.

Delpire et Cie traces his remarkable career. The exhibition is an opportunity for the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès to showcase a selection of works by some of the leading photographers of the 20th century: Michael Ackerman, Jehsong Baak, Raymond Depardon, Robert Doisneau, Michael Vanden Eeckhoudt, Harry Gruyaert, Paolo Pellegrin, Marc Riboud and Francesco Zizola.

Premièred at the Rencontres d’Arles in 2009, with the support of the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès, Delpire & Cie toured to Paris (the Maison Européenne de la Photographie) before crossing to the States as part of a major season of events involving the Aperture Gallery, La Maison Française at New York University, the cultural section of the French Embassy, and The Gallery at Hermès, each hosting part of an unprecedented photographic ‘circuit’ around Manhattan.
