JACK CHILES presents WAIVED GALLERY a group exhibition curated by Jessica Reaves and Jack Chiles, featuring new works by Juliana Cerqueira Leite, Ethan Breckenridge, Alex Decarli, Nathaniel De Large, FAUX/real, Myeongsoo Kim, Lee Puckett, Sophie Stone, Peter Sutherland and Chloe Wessner.
For this exhibition the gallery has taken on the constructed identity of a furniture showroom, realizing two distinct scenarios on each of its respective floors. In both of these installations the methods of display have been accentuated to present the works in a deliberately commercial context. These methods draw upon the visual language of the showrooms that surround the gallery’s Bowery
location; and call into question the role of the gallery as a retail environment and vice versa.
On the top floor, many of the works share a material affinity with the slick and polished design object, others use the familiar language of design as a point of reference towards a more relaxed construction process. This comparison brings to light the humorous influence of ‘contempo’ design in sculpture, opting for subtle material comparisons and considered methods of presentation over facile irony.
On the second floor SHOWROOM SCENARIO TWO delivers a more seductive and paired down version of the retail environment. Accentuating the role of advertising and persuasion in both gallery and showroom, these works point towards the frustrating and subtle dilemma of choice that is present in both scenarios.
