Stephan Stoyanov Gallery presents a solo exhibition by the DC-based artist Brian Dailey. This will be Dailey's first solo show in New York City. The exhibition is curated by Simon Watson.
The America in Color series originated two years ago with the objective to capture individual portraits of the American electorate, including those with no interest in politics or voting. The project explores the intersection of American politics, the individual character, and the role of perception in how we view and understand the vital components that shape the political process. Over the past 9 months, Dailey has traveled throughout the United States organizing impromptu photo-shoots in cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago, New Orleans, New York and rural Virginia as well as the urban and rural Southern, mid-West, Western, and Northeast states.
The portraits allow individuals to define themselves and express their own identities within a relaxed setting devoid of the highly charged atmosphere often associated with political debates. Each individual is asked to pose in front of a color background that represents their political affiliation: blue for Democrat, red for Republican, grey for Independent, green for the Green Party, and yellow if they don't vote or participate in the political process. Subjects are asked to strike a pose that best represents their character or identity.
These individual portraits are then arranged on a series of 4' x 8' panels comprised of four vertical by 11 horizontal images, totaling 44 images on each panel. The result is a vibrant tapestry of colors: a tribute to the regional diversity and character of the American electorate during a polarized national election. The exhibition will also feature a selection of individual portraits as well as a digital loop comprising more than 1000 portraits shot by the artist in over 25 states. The exhibition is scheduled to coincide with the upcoming 2012 election.
