Galerie Protégé presents the first New York solo exhibition of mixed media paintings by Steve McKenzie. McKenzie composes abstract works on linen over panel with a focus on gestural line and the connection between disparate elements from another time. Applying dry pigments, acrylic paint and graphite over a ground of smooth, venetian plaster, McKenzie embeds 19th century European documents and other ephemera into his paintings composing striking compositional structures. Rich with meaning and emotion McKenzie’s works bring to mind prickly tumbleweeds breaking free from their tangled captivity and lonely, microscopic amoeba adrift in moments of independence and union.
