Artist Statement:
“Dakota Spirit Diminished” is the selected works of Joshua Sean from his freshmen years as a photographer. During this period Joshua developed his photographic eye by documenting the vivid South Dakota landscapes with distorted phantasms of mankind.
Joshua illustrates the contrasts of South Dakota’s spectacular landscapes with the encroachment of human construction, agriculture, architecture, and lighting. For example: rural lighting, roads in the middle of nowhere, and remote locations inhabited by man and machines all suggest at the nature/human contrasts. Joshua exploits the dramatic blues and greys found from in the natural environments of dusk and dawn with incandescent yellows and florescent green lighting provided by man to amplify the nature/human contrasts. Longtime exposures at dusk and dawn also exaggerate and distort nature and man by use color and ghostly phantasms of lights and characters.
