This event has ended.

Groover was the defining still life photographer of her generation. Her credo was “Formalism is everything,” and her photographs remain a testament to her vision.

Beginning with her groundbreaking triptychs, Groover delighted in the intellectual and visual conundrums her photographs presented. Later work utilized the play of light and color, form and plane in tabletop arrangements. Even on the street, she made the mundane look impossible—layers of objects tumble through various planes—in a modern reinterpretation of the still life. From her jewel-toned work to her platinum-palladium prints with their exquisite and vast tonal range, her work balanced beauty with rigor. In this body of extraordinary and unique work, an artist’s vision and path can be traced.

JAN GROOVER (American. 1943 – 2012). Jan Groover was born in Plainfield, New Jersey in 1943, and made photographs from 1970 until her death. Her Kitchen Still Life photographs were first exhibited at Sonnabend Gallery. She received a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship in 1979. In 1987, Groover had a major solo retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art which subsequently toured the United States. Her work is included in the collections of all major American museums. Groover moved to France in 1991, where she lived with her husband, the painter Bruce Boice.
