This event has ended.

The line where your appearance flips over into reality will consist of arrangements of altered found objects, including banners, string, and home decorations. Colored strings will tie disparate objects together, demonstrating a Dutch physical therapy approach called String Therapy. During her performance, Ms. Moulton will take a personality test and trace the results in a 3-dimensional enneagram (a nine-sided figure used in a particular system of analysis to represent the spectrum of possible personality types). Objects will be moved into and out of ambiguous alignments until highly personal and potentially shameful revelations are revealed through a musical soundtrack.

Profoundly playful and imaginative, Shana Moulton’s work examines hierarchical designations of valuation and creates humorous alternative models of self-empowerment. Her work derives from very personal experience defined by her own fears and anxieties. As a feminine subject, who both aspires to possess beauty and to become beautiful, Moulton questions systems of evaluation through absurd association of objects and the potential meanings that these systems create. Feminine aspiration to beauty, often trivialized in cultural discourses, is re-examined through Moulton’s work as a potential tool for empowerment. Her performative work repeatedly rehearses rituals wherein the injured subject is healed and alternately released from the very darkness of her own psychological mire toward the affirmation of life.
