Hotel Particulier presents Under Construction, an exhibition taking place during the week of the 2012 Armory Show in NYC, presenting works by six artists whose galleries are participating in the art fair. Hotel Particulier aims to reintroduce café society with its new concept for the New York cultural and artistic landscape by offering multiple curated spaces including a gallery, an independent shop, and a café featuring a champagne|wine bar with small culinary plates. All spaces are separated and brought together by a common thread – a curated theme on a critical contemporary issue. Each exhibition and accompanying series of special programming will run for two to three months.
Located in an old SoHo garage north of Grand Street, and currently under construction, this raw space offers an opportunity to exhibit work in a setting that is different from the traditional white box art gallery.The curator of this project, Omar Lopez-Chahoud, and founder/director Frederique Thiollet conducted studio visits to select large-scale, sculptural, and in some cases site specific works.The participating galleries and artists are: Baro Gallery/Courtney Smith, Galerie Daniel Templon/Ivan Navarro,moniquemeloche gallery/Justin Cooper, Nicole Klagsbrun/Laleh Khorramian, On Stellar Rays/Maria Petschning, and Rhona Hoffman Gallery/Luis Gispert.
Among the artists in the exhibition, Justin Cooper will be presenting an installation entitled "Bye," consisting of garden hoses intervening two different levels of the space to create a three dimensional "drawing." The artist describes the work, which "...draws inspiration from an American suburban fantasia that only existed within the realms of feverish dreams or what I like to refer to as 'formalized hallucinations.' At once out of control and intimately contained, very normal materials take on a head-spinning possessed quality creating a wobble between the everyday and the otherworldly." Ivan Navarro's infinite light tunnel sculpture confronts the viewer with the word "degenerate," questioning the boundaries between the physical and the psychological. Courtney Smithwill install a maximum of ten columns and three chandeliers that will delineate and reconfigure the exhibition space. Smith's work seeks to explore the double life of objects inherent in the positive/negative relationship to the human body.
