In “Somewhere in Between” Christy Powers presents a new series of watercolor and mixed media paintings that address memory and how it is changing in a contemporary society where seemingly all events are now digitally documented and shared amongst our personal communities.
Her work investigates social memory, exploring this new vast cloud of imagery and just how easily both specific and universal moments can be found with a simple image search. The paintings are reconstructions of memories she creates through distorting and combining personal photos with images strangers have posted online. By creating a broken narrative of people, places and events blended together, Powers reveals the fluid and often-fictitious nature of memory.
