Sonnabend Gallery presents “The Four Seasons (after Arcimboldo)," an installation of new works by Philip Haas.
Inspired by Giuseppe Arcimboldo's Renaissance paintings of the four seasons, comprising SPRING, SUMMER, AUTUMN and WINTER, Philip Haas has created a sculptural interpretation which accentuates the original works' visual puzzle of natural forms: flowers, ivy, moss, fungi, vegetables, fruit, trees, bark, branches, twigs - as they are reconfigured to form four human portraits, each representing an individual season. The resulting sculptures are at once grotesque, earthy and exuberant.
A large-scale version of THE FOUR SEASONS, each work 15 feet high, will be on view in London this summer in the garden of the Dulwich Picture Gallery.
Philip Haas’s exhibition “Butchers, Dragons, Gods and Skeletons” at the Kimbell Art Museum was listed by TIME magazine as one of the top ten museum shows of 2009; his large-scale sculpture has been presented at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. and Versailles; and his feature film “Angels and Insects” was nominated for an Academy Award and the Cannes Film Festival Palme d'Or.
