This event has ended.

The Proposition presents, Night Calling, the third solo exhibition of works on paper by Allison Hawkins.

Night Calling explores the creature and figure within the landscape. It is a mysterious landscape, a place so unreal that it becomes an escape, a refuge. There are dark and densely wooded forests covert in feeling and stark open spaces melancholy in their grey expanse.

Female figures appear in the land, charged with an animal purpose. They do not indicate a specific time or place and convey the possibility of a calling from somewhere/something beyond. A belief system emerges, one that is ancient, fundamental, and pertains to the energies of earth, weather, and animals. Reality is slightly straddled and in this there is a mythic aspect to the narrative.

I am very interested in rich fields of black, inky wash that contrast with the white of the paper. These dark, dense sections evoke in me a feeling of deep space, protection, intensity, and the freedom of the cover of night. These areas are paired with delicate line-work and bits of subtle color that sometimes shine through.

Allison Hawkins was born in Columbus, OH and currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
