This event has ended.

Carrie Mae Rose’s Wearable Weapons explore the power of vulnerability and the concept of devastating beauty. By using materials that can create shock, she seeks to awaken a heightened sense of caution and reverence. Her projects stem from themes of personal and spiritual intimacy - the need to feel safe and protected while being vulnerable, and the delicate boundaries between opening and the potential to be hurt. The experience of vulnerability links to the sensation of burning: you heightened sense of awareness; you want to hide, you want to move. Inspired by the incendiary power of fire and lightning, Rose harnesses electricity as a medium to explore the hazards of vulnerability. Rose’s wearables are modernized spiritual armor, bristling with electrified hardware, sound sensors, and violet wands. Circular shapes, wings, and the theme of weaponry-as-protection are recurring themes in her projects, and reflect a desire for wholeness, freedom, and safety. These Wearable Weapons are built to provoke, inspire, and protect the participant. Though they do not attack, each piece must be worn, handled, and treated with respect. If the Gods wore armor, what would the substance of the armor of the Gods be? To Rose, the answer is fire: pure intensity; impenetrable density. By representing this Fire-of-the-Gods through electricity, Wearable Weapons offer participants an opening to the sublime - though wearers must first embrace their vulnerability.
