This event has ended.

After Alfred Leslie turned from abstract to figurative painting, he produced a series of portraits of women. The Lives of Some Women, was comprised of 25 paintings made over almost twenty years, from 1968 to 1986. For this new exhibition of the same name, Leslie is looking both forward and backward. In these multifigure compositions, he quotes from earlier poses.

His realistic painting style has now been merged with the technology of digital photography, creating fantastic hybrid views. Subject matter is vaguely a 1930s brothel, replete with a variety of women, but these portraits are open to interpretation.

Leslie’s ability to delineate the details of material, bodies, and expressions is evident in these figures. He delights in the digital ability to drop things out so the collage elements are visible. It is difficult to recognize that these images are digitally drawn by hand, but printed as photographs. Welcome to the new technology.

ALFRED LESLIE (American, b. 1927) is a renowned painter and filmmaker. He lives in New York.
