This event has ended.

Adam Baumgold Gallery presents the exhibition "Face to Face". The exhibition will explore different approaches to portraits, in a diverse range of styles, by 36 contemporary and 20th century artists.

Featured in the exhibition is Chuck Close's graphite drawing Chris, 1974, an example of the artist's precise, gridded method of executing portraits. The color woodcut Bathing Cap, 1985, by Alex Katz, presents a placid visage of Ada in her green swimming cap, while in each of Katz's two painting studies for Swimmer, 1973, a head emerges dramatically from the water to gasp for air. Rafael Ferrer's paper bag faces seamlessly combine many artistic styles and motifs.

Jim Nutt's graphite drawing Untitled, 2005, contrasts sensitive line against bold, abstract shapes to form a figure - his own iconic woman - at once restrained and full of energy. Renée French's masterful, intimately scaled new graphite portraits display features with comically grotesque distortions. Frohawk Two Feathers uses ink, tea, coffee, and acrylics on paper to paint portraits like Black Gold (Marechell Fontaine Bleau), 2010, an artifact from a playful, alternative version of real colonial history. In David Levine's drawing Freud, 1964 a Sigmund Freud with an inflated head plays the ego, frolicking about hand-in-hand with two characters labeled "s.e." and "id".

In Charles Burns's Before and After diptychs, 2000, two straightforward portraits of a boy and girl are juxtaposed, each with its own disturbing, Dorian Gray-like accompaniment. Bette Blank's frontal portrait painting of Einstein, 2012, in a red sweater, is framed by his equations on a blackboard. Robin Tewes's painting Hyperdulia is a portrait about loss, in which a mother and her son view a portrait of the Virgin Mary cradling an empty space where her son should be.
