Kips Gallery presents a solo exhibition of works of Michael Steinbrick.

Michael Steinbrick, a native of Newark, New Jersey, earned his BFA from Montclair State University. He honed his craft abroad at the Constantijn Huygens Academie in Kampen, The Netherlands. Breaking away from an early abstract style his current work is highly influenced by the photosrealists. These New York cityscape paintings capture the many layers of a chaotic world.

New York City, an intermingling of glitz and grit, and in no other city is there such an obvious combination and happy marriage between the two. A dirty cab cascading down a towering array of bright lights and flashy advertisements. High tech imagery surrounding the garbage lined sidewalks. A fashion model tossing a coin into the can of a homeless person. Somehow in New York it works and is embraced.

These paintings capture the stillness amidst the chaos of a paradoxical city, one which encapsulates hope and fear, light and dark, glamour and grime. They reflect the inherent duality of human nature and its’ subsequent manifestations. But somewhere beneath these frenetic cityscapes lies a cohesive calmness, one which the artist hopes to convey to the viewer. By alternating between intricate detail and a painterly brushstroke he creates a blending and juxtaposition of styles. These extremely elaborate compositions evoke a dance between line, shape, and color that takes the viewer’s eye on a journey beyond the canvas.
