This event has ended.

Valerie Goodman Gallery presents the stirring, poetic, sculptural furniture of Jacques Jarrige. After successful shows in Paris and New York in 2010, Jacques Jarrige promises to once again enchant New York audiences—with never-before-seen, functional art creations that evoke both the uneven meanderings of nature and the sophisticated comfort of urban modernity.

Jarrige’s roots are in Classicism, Modernism and Art Brut, but the defining element in his creations is an engaging effortlessness; they connect man and nature with an utter simplicity and balance that restores the spirit. His work is charged with a flowing energy that recalls the poetic fluidity of Matisse’s dancers or the mobility of Calder’s sculptures.

The exhibition will unveil Jacques Jarrige’s latest work: sculpted cabinets, room dividers, desks and lighting. A particularly outstanding piece is a large, dramatic screen evoking dances from antiquity which traces dramatic light and shadow onto a room. (See video Clip).
Jarrige explains "I develop my vocabulary and technique in the moment. . as I was cutting the wood to follow my drawing I discovered the trembling , hesitating , erosion-like quality of the line that defined this body of work." (Read more)

In addition to his individual pursuit, Jacques Jarrige also dedicates time to a Parisian psychiatric hospital. An impressive mobile sculpture created by Jarrige and the patients will be on view to demonstrate the synergy of the collaboration.
