Tomlinson Kong Contemporary presents the first NYC solo-exhibition by American sculptor Christopher Kurtz, entitled Longhand.
Longhand consists of a concise group of painted wood sculptures comprised of idealized, linear forms. Kurtz’s use of line recalls Paul Klee’s iconic quote that drawing is like “taking a line for a walk,” but on a more personal level he is influenced by his father’s work as a calligrapher. The artist has always been enchanted by the way his father’s expressive, abstracted letter forms seemed to appear like magic with flourishes, serifs, and deep contrasts that have made their way into this body of work...
