This event has ended.

This exhibition is a collection of 250 portrait and figure sketches of models created by Robert Holden over a 25-year period in a saturday class at the Art Students League of New York.

Unlike the subjects of Picasso’s Gertrude Stein, da Vinci’s Mona Lisa and a few other masterpieces, very little attention is paid to the models who posed gloriously from life for so many of the figure paintings and portraits admired by artists, art lovers and the general public the world over.

The relative anonymity of the artist’s model is evidenced in “Saturday Models,” an exhibit of some 250 oil paintings in an ongoing class reserved for members of The Art Students League of New York. Holden says he can recall details about nearly all of the painting sessions, but doesn't know the names of most of the models in this exhibit.

This exhibit is made possible in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
