This event has ended.

Louis B. James presents Parenthesis, a show of new work by New York based artist Chris Domenick. Comprising sculpture, large and small scale works on paper, as well as manipulated and found objects, Domenick’s work weaves through ideas of communication, language, mark making and the landscape.

Domenick’s large-scale works on paper are imbued with the physicality of both their materiality and their making. In many instances Domenick carried with him large sheets of roughly toothed Arches paper to archetypically remote locations, be it Walden Pond, Robert Smithson’s private Little Fort Island, or the Monson Slate Quarry, making rubbings of both text and topography, creating drawings with an indexical relationship to the landscape. At the same time he complicates this romantic notion through a complex system of graffiti-like etchings, swathes of spray paint, “wall tattoos,” and other more quotidian scribbles. The visible mark is at once psychically charged and completely random, grandly poetic and banal.

Interspersed among the large drawings are found objects, clipboards and jagged sheets of metal mounted in dialogue; and large sculptural forms made of wood, formica, some painted, some covered in ratty carpet, in the shape of letters from an unknown alphabet, forms hovering constantly on the verge of intelligibility. Domenick’s drawing and sculpture reveals language de-contextualized, a poetics of abstraction, a physical and psychic void where information is meant to be.
