With a mixture of brightness and melancholy the four artists in "Show #3" usher us into the Fall Season.
"Terrible Things" by Peter Mattei is a video about his developmentally disabled cousin "Robert Foushee" who enjoys dressing up like Dracula on Halloween. A silent piece, the scenes are full of detail and evolve slowly to reveal the nature of the character and the atmosphere that surrounds him. One gets a sense that there is something going on beneath the surface that is not revealing itself. By playing "Dracula", Robert Foushee explores part of his
identity, and we get to experience a mysterious world, one that is not easily understood.
Self taught artist Dean Millien creates three-dimensional creatures out of aluminum foil. Real without being too
realistic, he has an extraordinary capacity to create whatever he imagines.
For Heidi Hahn naiveté is a means to expression. Both silly and dark her paintings are rendered in a primitive
fashion. Smiling, dancing and crying, her simplified expressions and poses illustrate a personal narrative of emotion.
The photographs of Ruben Ortiz Torres document the Punk scene in Mexico City during the 80s and 90s.
The alternative styles and spaces that the young people inhabit describe a gritty yet magical place. They are a testament to his personal involvement in the scene and an important part of his formative years as an artist.
