Kips Gallery presents Catch Pendulum, a solo exhibition of works of Shukou Tsuchiya.

Shukou Tsuchiya, the Suiboku painter also known for his talents as the Stain artist. Unlike the image of the traditional Suiboku
painter, Tsuchiya in only in 30’s and himself is very frank with modern style. The way he can fuse this sense to the artwork is one of the reasons why he is receiving the attention from young folks.

Many Japanese people would imagine the Suiboku painting as an interest for the elderly people, since the art reflect the stability of mind. Yet, in early 20’s, Tsuchiya became the master in Nanboku Bokuga Association. This unusual accomplishment comes from his childhood environment; where he felt closeness to the Japanese-style. Even as a young boy, Tsuchiya had an interest in Japanese art like “ukiyoe” prints and felt them as “COOL”. The art and music was the thing he loved at deeply.

The method Tsuchiya uses to perform his artistry is very unique, not only in the Traditional Suiboku painting, but also in the Japanese Art. To give an example would be his live art performance with the club music. With his talent in the music field, Tsuchiya has a strong passion to bring art closer in everyone’s life just like the music is in. As he performs his art, Tsuchiya still keeps the quality of traditional Suibokuga, as he brings some motif from outside of Japanese tradition, like the alphabets or brand logo, yet coexists in harmony. On top of these performances, Tsuchiya has a strong ideal of becoming an artist with an ability to express the good old Japanese history after experiencing a study abroad - and this is also one of the qualities he puts in his artwork.

While seeing the sense of “today” within Tsuchiya’s artwork, there lies a deep and meaningful “past” traditions from Suiboku painting. The work may be in-depth, but it is open for anyone to enter.
