This event has ended.

Westwood Gallery presents three artists inspired by rhythms in nature.

Gallery I
MICHAEL DESROSIERS
paintings and mixed media works on canvas and paper
The dynamic paintings by DesRosiers reflect a distillation of the forces of nature within an intense chromatic dialogue. “I work to create a highly personal art that doesn’t aspire to reproduce nature but rather to comprehend and replicate its underlying organization. It is the recurrent patterns continually offered up by nature that interest me. My sources of inspiration range from the interchange between land and sea, the ever changing effect of light, or the biological forces at work in the natural world”. In addition to paintings, the gallery will exhibit mixed media works by DesRosiers that feature exquisite designs executed with layers of painted printed paper and paint films mounted on either canvas or rag board.

Gallery II
HIDEKO KUDO
paintings on leather and works on paper
The artist has strived to understand what she calls “the fundamental laws of nature”, by closely observing the patterns and shapes in the natural world. Kudo discovered, in her own words, “the hidden rhythms of reality defined by lines, dots, and circles.” Her artwork includes intricate and flowing lines burned and painted on specially prepared leather. The artist describes her work as “symbolic tattoos for the universe,” highlighting the metaphorical significance of preserving her inspirations from nature. On view is an oblong, hollow leather sculpture with painted and burnished patterns, as well as copperplate works on paper.

Gallery III
MINAKO SHIMURA
paintings on leather
Shimura creates beautifully crafted paintings on leather, created by manipulating the surface into forms and figures. The assemblage comes to life in the form of traditional Japanese landscape filled with sacred and mythological figures. The artist has lived and worked in Nara, Japan, the historic city known for being the former capital of Japan around 700 A.D. The rich cultural heritage and traditional values that characterize the region is directly reflected in the artist’s work.
