ACA Galleries announces Color and Form: The Work of Leon Berkowitz and Anita Huffington, a dynamic pairing of two singular American artists. The exhibition will feature Berkowitz’s “Seven Lights” series alongside recent bronzes by Huffington.
In uniting the work of Leon Berkowitz and Anita Huffington, Color and Form intends to shed light on the deeply meticulous and equally transcendent practice of these two artists. To achieve this effect, curator Mikaela Lamarche has displayed the paintings of Leon Berkowitz and the drawings and sculptures of Anita Huffington together, the brilliant colors of Berkowitz’s canvases beside the exquisite and vulnerable forms of Huffington’s sculptures and drawings. Through comparison, their legacies deepen as well as diverge. Above all, it is the goal of Color and Form to illuminate the moving contributions of Leon Berkowitz and Anita Huffington to the field of art. Born in Philadelphia, Leon Berkowitz (1919 – 1987) spent much of his career in Washington D.C. As the co-founder and director of the Workshop Center, as well as an influential teacher and mentor, Berkowitz emerged as one of the leading figures of the Color Field School. Although deeply expressive in their own right, Berkowitz’s abstract paintings – serene, contemplative and calm – luminously contrasted those of his Abstract Expressionist peers. Comprised of thirty to sixty very thin layers of color, Berkowitz’s paintings developed into radiant tapestries of color and light, praised for both their technical skill and spiritual resonance. The “Seven Lights” series included in Color and Form was produced at the height of Berkowitz’s career and is widely considered his crowning achievement. “Seven Lights” is joined by additional examples of Berkowitz’s classic Color Field paintings. Berkowitz’s paintings are included in many private and public collections, including those of the Museum of Modern Art, the High Museum of Art, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden and the National Museum of American Art in Washington D.C. Joining Berkowitz’s canvases are the drawings and bronzes of Anita Huffington (born in 1934). In Huffington’s sculptures, spanning the past two decades, seemingly effortless, supple forms prevail. From alabaster, sandstone, wood and clay, her sculptures bear both classic and modern influences and return to the most elemental of artistic subjects, the human body. Originally trained as a dancer under the tutelage of Merce Cunningham and Martha Graham, Huffington moved to the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas where she has lived and worked ever since. Like Berkowitz, Huffington’s work is the product of immense concentration and time, and we are happy to announce that the artist will be joining us for the opening reception of Color and Form. Her work has been exhibited throughout the country and is part of the public collections of the Crystal Bridges Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Morris Museum of Art, among many others. ACA is proud to be showing Huffington’s work for the first time in Color and Form.
