Galerie Protégé presents VIBRATIONS, a solo exhibition of altered paint chip sculpture, paintings, and mixed media works on canvas by Carrie Sunday. Known for her one of a kind, large scale abstractions composed entirely of individually altered paint chips, Carrie Sunday re-purposes tiny color samples to create breathtaking, expansive compositions of color, texture and graphic energy. Inspired by the early modernist work of Piet Mondrian, Sunday embeds the canvas with movement through the application of layered media that includes energetic brush strokes, winding dot work, barcodes, and other small curiosities. Color dances throughout the work in bursts and waves while the interplay of light and shadow imbue a sense of depth and mystery about the inner workings of Sunday’s structures.

VIBRATIONS is a series of new work that diverges from Sunday’s strategically organized pattern systems into various methods of accumulation and division -- compositions that vacillate between the twin extremes of unity and disintegration. Sunday’s signature paint chips are piled high atop the canvas while squares of paint and colored glue dots travel across the canvas intermingling in a harmony of geometric abstraction, controlled chaos, and flowing, optic movement.

BIOGRAPHY Carrie Sunday’s works are in public and private collections in Geneva, Switzerland, Naples, Florida, Greenwich, Connecticut, and Princeton, New Jersey. Sunday’s work is permanently installed on the 5th floor at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York City.

MISSION STATEMENT Galerie Protégé exists as a platform for emerging and non-represented artists to exhibit their work in the heart of New York City’s Chelsea gallery district. Located on the lower level of Chelsea Frames, an established conservation framing studio, Galerie Protégé is dedicated to exhibiting contemporary works of art in a wide range of media including but not limited to painting, drawing, photography and performance-based work.

Founded in the spring of 2011 by Jaclyn Acker and Debra Kowalski, Galerie Protégé was born of a mutual desire to offer emerging and non-represented artists an opportunity to make their mark on the New York City art world -- an opportunity that was similarly extended to them by their friend and mentor Daniel Beauchemin who helped them find their niche in the big city.

VIBRATIONS was organized and curated by Jaclyn Acker and Debra Kowalski with graphic design by Andy Fligel. Installation by Reginaldo Acioli.
