"Natural/Constructed Spaces I" Exhibition

Contemporary artists are painting their impressions of the constructed world and its impact on natural spaces, which underscores our persistent need to understand ourselves through space. This survey highlights the diversity in each subject and points to the similarities and connections that bridge the 'Elysian fields' to the inner city and the shining metropolis to the underworld. Whether it is homage to the miracle of nature, an elegy to its decline, or an investigation of the inventiveness and meaning of the structures we build to shelter ourselves, the larger environment continues to provide inspiration to artists worldwide.
The natural space that occurs within the planet's biodiversity includes growing, dying, entropic, and organic systems. In contrast, assembling elements and pieces forms new spaces creating the notion of 'Constructed Spaces'. Some artists explore the intersection of the natural and constructed space, dealing with grids, networks, or futuristic exploration. Others create otherworldly spaces, poetic and romantic landscapes, or the abstract sublime to create a new reality.
As we confront diminishing resources and a rapidly changing planet, now is a relevant moment to see how artists are responding to this ever-shifting world. From an idyllic view of pristine, untouched nature to a constructed world where nature has been entirely subjugated, Natural/Constructed Spaces I brings together 33 artists who treat this subject in ways as varied as the land itself.
There will be a panel discussion for Natural/Constructed Spaces I held on June 21 from 4 to 5 pm in conjunction with this exhibition.
