In the pursuit of presenting an image of how culture is perpetuated through music, Pace Public Relations announces an exhibition of new works by Tessa BX & Alex Helfand. The show will be the artists’ first exhibition in the space.

Tessa’s work in this exhibition focuses primarily on the visual aesthetic of youth culture in both the mainstream and underground electronic music scene, with influences lying heavily in her personal life. Tessa’s pieces maintain minimal formal qualities while displaying the frivolous, gaudier elements of visual trademarks inspired by the outlandish, euphoric, and often times farcical aspects of the modern teenage rage movement.

The way in which music transforms a space is a prime motivation behind Alex’s sculptures and video works. Alex’s minimal visual aims can be mirrored with the recollection specific to hearing a new song for the first time; how it not infrequently alters into traces. The appropriated materiality of the works fabricate an aesthetic experience with references to graffiti culture, drawing on the encounter of electronic music and its elated nightlife backdrop.

Tessa Benson-Xu was born in 1993, raised in Washington, DC., and now lives in Brooklyn, NY. She is currently a sophomore studying drawing and painting at New York University.

Alex Helfand was born in 1991 in St. Paul, Minnesota and now lives in New York City. He is currently a junior studying sculpture at New York University and was selected for the NYU Emerging Jewish Artist fellowship in his sophomore year.
