In February of 1945 five Marines raise a U.S. flag on Mount Suribachi, Japan.

In 1903 Emma Lazarus’ poem The New Colossus (“…Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free…) is engraved on a bronze plaque and mounted inside the lower level of the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty.
