This event has ended.

Fitzroy Gallery announces Thick as A Brick, a solo exhibition by Gibb Slife, comprised of new paintings, sculpture and photographs.

In his second exhibition at Fitzroy Gallery, Gibb Slife explores the path between the incongruity of pop culture ephemera and the trompe l'oeil spirit of the permanent moment. Slife's exploration of "painting as object", with references ranging from Pablo Picasso's Dora Maar Au Chat to John Peto's Letter Rack, seeks to draw connections between the abstract, the gesture and the photograph.

In moments where the visual eclipses thought, clarity and static are interchangeable. Neither nihilism nor optimism are at play in Thick As A Brick, there is only a state of 'becoming." Distorted appearances, coffee stains and an awkwardly composed flower box are among the elements that create a visual narrative that threads the show together. Slife's interest in the fine line that separates the stringent from the unscrupulous is evident and it suggests that rational deduction is only a temporary state of mind.
