This event has ended.

Presentation international, glass sculptures and objects were made by artists from Czech Republic, Israel, Korea, Slovakia, USA, Luxembourg and France

Exhibition presents works by artists who have started their work in glass more then sixty years ago, together with artists who have recently completed their studies. What unites them? Besides working with glass it is the relationship of student and professor.

The term glass creates the impression of something useful, beautiful, fragile, but we all know of the existence of glass, we use it, glass protects us , we cover houses by glass them houses, we take it as something quite common. Artists, which represents the Invitation exhibition at the Czech Center, studied glass from another perspective. They learned to shape well this tricky, but beautiful material to express their feelings and mood. Stanislav Libensky and Jaroslava Brychtova, one of the pioneers of Czech studio glass movement, are legends and their work is represented in the collections of prestigious museums throughout the world including the Metropolitan Museum in New York, as well as in the valuable private collections. In New York we could find several of them. It was the tandem Libensky and Brychtova, who changed over time use of glass from the vase into a monumental statue from molten glass for ever. Right next to the Red Queen is installed the head of boxer Klitschko by Václav Machač. This great sculptor is a student of Stanislav Libensky and he dedicated his life to blown and painted glass, and teaching students of the Secondary School of Glassmaking in Novy Bor. This school teaches Czech designers and artists for 140 years already. Machač students like Svetlana Svatosova, chandeliers designer, Jakub Janďourek and Ota Svoboda, who founded the design studio Born in Bor, Lukas Jaburek, chief designer of Moser company present their own work and still discover and conquer the world of art. Present here mainly designed vases, paperweights, objects for decoration of tables, candlesticks... Nearly one could say that after sixty years of development, the glass is back where it began. But it would be a big mistake: young artists mastered the arts of their professors, technologies and ways of thinking very well. They move their work into a fine art field by combining the glass with other media and materials, by using traditional craft new ways and finally push the glass from craft into art and high design.

The exhibition at the Czech Center will charm visitors only for the beauty of the presented works. Experts will also appreciate that in addition to news from the studios of the leading glass artists will get survey of the work by emerging talents, from Czech Republic but also from abroad. Song Mi Kim, sculptor from Korea has completed her studies at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, Studio Concern has already won the Red Dot Design Award / 2009 /, Katerina Verguelis from Israel helped to build the glass studio at Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem during her studies there.

Exhibition “Invitation” by its good timing will enlarge offer of the contemporary sculpture and design made of glass which will be presented on Manhattan at SOFA art fair just the first week of the exhibition. It also invites visitors of the Czech Centre and lovers of the "glass" to the new cultural event in Prague, the fourth Prague Festival, international meeting of artists working with glass.
