Knox Gallery presents Art Takes Seoul, a collaborative exhibition, featuring the work of Knox Gallery's resident artist, Mira Gandy, and one woman play Seoul for Sale in NYC written and performed by Korean American playwright, Ahrum Claiborne.
Through the power of exposal, the exhibition explores themes of identity, filial relationships, personal triumph, 1980's hip-hop and pop culture and the notion of the "American Dream."
The word "Seoul" in the exhibition's title is viewed as a homophone, indicting not just a "country " but "soul". Thus, emphasizing both artists belief, that the passion and spirit behind an artist's work is a prerequisite for meaningful creation.
Mira Gandy's recent works include mixed media paintings, collages and video imagery that explore such themes as memory, nostalgia, journey and pop culture. Ahrum Claiborne portrays seven different characters in the premiere of this autobiographical story that chronicles her journey from South Korea to the streets of New York City, during the 1980's Hip Hop era. When merged, the exhibition is a commentary on the use of life experience in art as a catalyst for human connection and the bridging of cultural gaps.
