Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning is showcasing Aural Visions, a new body of sculptures by Jeong Hyung Lee, the thirtieth JCAL Workspace Artist. The exhibition will open at the newly renovated William P. Miller Jr. Gallery. The exhibition celebrates the culmination of Lee’s residency at JCAL by presenting works he has created during his year-long residency.

Lee has been working with found and broken objects, combining them into a structure that serves as a metaphor for contemporary life and evokes images and sounds that are a part of its fabric. An international artist, Lee strives to create art that transcends cultural barriers and that taps into feelings and emotions that are universal in nature.

The current exhibition tells a truly compelling story, one that through the thoughtful inclusion of materials and artifacts from different cultures and historical periods, makes a major statement about the role of immigrants in New York City and the significant impact they have played in shaping the city and its psyche.

Lee’s work can be interpreted from several vantage points. Looking at it from a deconstructive view, there are the basic materials incorporated into the sculpture that stimulates the senses and memories of how a now arcane item made an impression on you as a child or perhaps triggered some sort of aural association. Viewed from a reconstructive vantage point, Lee’s sculpture combines the old and the new, the visual and the aural to create something transformative that goes well beyond the contemplation of individual sculpture components.

Lee is an impressive artist whose unique view of the world as expressed through his art form bodes well for his future. He follows a shining tradition of up and coming artists who have made their first march on the art world in the galleries and studios of the Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning.
