This event has ended.

Hearne Pardee builds images that emphasize the complexity of the perceived world. He continues to combine painting from observation with colored paper collage, while opening up new avenues of investigation into image making.

The new works include paintings of an abandoned computer lab—where empty spaces are charged with memories, and pasted colored papers evoke the glow of electronic devices—and also of the artist's studio, where paintings on the wall, and the wall itself, become active subjects. Elsewhere, elements of paintings combine with recycled images, including scanned drawings and photographs, to suggest the depth and complexity of our visual experience. The eye is more mysterious than a camera; highly resolved images are not given by nature but constructed by hand or by other technologies. Unlike digital photographs, the world itself never resolves into pixels but offers ever deeper levels of detail. To evoke this depth, Pardee's compositions have become more dense and painterly, less built up out of separate elements.

Pardee has long painted on site from everyday landscapes, both in the suburbs of Davis, California, and in Nessakouya, a village on the Pacific Island of New Caledonia, places linked through the familiar geography of yards and porches, roads and gardens. The cross-fertilization of "resources" from these different landscapes generates metaphors of growth and cultivation, expressed in the green of foliage, the blue of sky and water, and the red of earth. Pardee develops this cross-fertilization by juxtaposing related landscapes to generate composite forms around the armature of a grid.
