This event has ended.

SchoolHouse Projects, a space designed specifically for independent curator projects, presents the exhibition, Two-Step Death Trap by artist James J. Williams III organized by independent curator Jamie Sterns.

For his premiere show within the project space, and in keeping with the preoccupations of the season, Williams will offer a stage within which one can dance themselves to death. One walks into a set painted with past and potential future bouts in the name of honor. Paintings, photographs, and objects will line the barn-like space at 233 Mott Street, repurposed for the staged duel in all its visual incarnations. Is one a participant in the action? Is this the ritual’s beginning or a remnant of this gentleman’s dance?

In curating the space’s sophomore exhibition, Jamie Sterns selected the works of James J. Williams III, saying, “…through the way he traverses his life and work, James creates poetic alternatives that are very much an accumulation of minor keys. There is a story being told, but the story has no beginning, middle, or end – and its purpose is not to reveal but to exist and exist loosely. This is where the possibility for magic occurs.”

The exhibition will take place in the Old School – a multi-purpose schoolhouse space on Mott Street. SchoolHouse Projects shares its curator focus with that of SPRING/BREAK Art Show, and furthers a commitment to showcasing innovative curatorial voices within non-traditional spaces.James J.
