This event has ended.

James Fuentes announces their project room solo exhibition "USA Body Work It" by Gina Beavers.

Gina Beavers has worked in series alternately abstract and figurative for several years, sourcing from objects and images glanced from life, as well as appropriating modes of painting from children's drawings and how-to-paint books. Under all has been a desire to understand the nature of a trained vs. an untrained painter and a desire to represent abstraction and abstract reality.

In the series of paintings for this show, 'USA Body Work It' the artist fuses these issues in one 'body' of work. Beginning with her interest in heavy paint and relief, she creates a sculptural nude with an overlay of another reference in the form of a body painting. This creates a narrative, at once abstract and specific. Drawing from the existing art form of body painting, they are documentary evidence of the culture. They are also informed by urban public art initiatives such as the 'cow parade' and what has been historically known as 'coffee shop art'. The paintings raise issues of high and low, taught and self-taught, good painting and bad painting. They are put on and changeable, allowing the artist to tackle horror imagery, cultural tourism, Art History, gender identity, being seen, patriotic symbols (including money) health and wellness, and death.
