Jenny Lynn McNutt "Zoopsia"

Art 101

poster for Jenny Lynn McNutt "Zoopsia"

This event has ended.

Zoopsia is the visual hallucination of animals, here realized in McNutt's new paintings. "The rabbit is the shape of the imagination in motion meandering or hopping between my ears these past several years... The rabbit also has a vast mythological and spiritually symbolic history as in Native American and West African mythologies where they are seen simultaneously as benevolent creatures and tricksters." JLM 2012

The motion, the color, the figures -- generously flavored with eros -- lure the viewer into this painted phantasmagorical world of cavorting rabbits, hares and... but wait, are they really all rabbits? Was there a glimpse of human in that bunny's visage, or was it simply a moment's illusion?

"The interplay between the human, the animal, and this force that drives both human and animal -- what Aristotle and later philosophers call "conatus" -- give McNutt's paintings and gouaches their counterpointing tensions." Tom Sleigh, 2012 (see catalog)

For eight years McNutt has concentrated on sculpture and performance art. We rejoice in this return to her first love, paint.
