This event has ended.

toomer labzda presents AMP, Joe Brittain's first New York solo show.

Brittain's work focuses on geology and the interaction between science and nature. AMP, (which incorporates site specific drawings and sculpture) is an acronym for animal, mineral, plant, while also acknowledging the impact of volume and resonance rooted in his work. In defining his own organic anomalies, Brittain emulates, energy forces, such as ley lines. These are most present in his drawings: fluid, linear and somewhat messy (ala Cy Twombly, Dieter Roth and Louise Bourgeois). Brittain chooses to draw on newsprint or drywall, producing a contemporary take on cave dwelling décor; in line, tonality and scale.

Brittain's archetypal mark making is harmonized by the isometric construction of his sculpture. Stones are balanced on wood, bound to iron and engulfed by cork. Fossilized bones are snared in wire and soil based batteries are housed in glass. Repeated experiments with basic minerals and elements extenuate their implied function and form. The product of Brittian’s endeavors exist as anachronistic relics, which resist the blind veneration tied to discovery. Instead, Brittain offers no overarching direction, acting only as an absent conductor between object and audience.

Joe Brittain was born in Springville, NY and currently lives and works in New York, NY. He graduated in 2003 with a BFA from SUNY University at Buffalo and has concentrated on his studio practice while also project managing for various artists and institutes. He has exhibited predominantly in New York and was recently awarded a NYFA sculpture fellowship.
