Harris Lieberman presents the first US solo exhibition of Polish artist Aneta Grzeszykowska. Working primarily in photography and film, the artist explores notions of feminism, personal history, absence and time. The exhibition features a recent film and an artist’s book of collages.

LOVEBOOK (2010) is a homage and a dialog with the works of six contemporary female artists - Ana Mendieta, Birgit Jürgenssen, Francesca Woodman, Hannah Wilke, Helen Chadwick and Theresa Hak Kyung Cha. These artists used their bodies to challenge the notions of self-portraiture and comment on issues of identity, violence, life and death; means and subject matter close to Grzeszykowska's own work. The book consists of collages in which the artist places herself within the iconic artworks of the aforementioned women, creating somewhat disturbing, para-erotic, surrealist doubleportraits. The dynamic between the subject skeeps shifting from tenderness to violence; Grzeszykowska seems to be devouring her heroins. Grzeszykowska, pregnant with her first child while working on this book, chose the six artists for their untimely and tragic deaths. The contrast between the anticipated new life and the inevitability of the six’s demise brings forth a familiar subject of life and death, while reflecting on how Grzeszykowska’s own work has been shaped by these six women. CLOCK (2011) is a 12-hour long video in which Grzeszykowska performs choreographed dance compositions. The video is shown in sync with hours of the day - the artist’s image is multiplied number of times to correspond with the time of day. With each new hour, new composition unfolds with another ‘copy’ of the artist added to the scene.

Aneta Grzeszykowska (b.1974) received her masters degree from Graphic Arts Department at the Warsaw Fine Arts Academy.
